Stuck for entertaining ideas this half term? Well, one day can be spent at the glorious Croham Hurst Woods. Adventure, exploration and a little bit of magic will give you and your family a fun-filled day to remember.
Located in South Croydon, not far from Selsdon, the ancient woods hold a lot of history. They were once home to a Mesolithic settlement around 5,000 to 3,000 years BC, with evidence of stone age and bronze age settlements in the woods as well.
Covering 33.6 hectares, Croham Hurst Woods are glorious, expecially at this time of year when the leaves litter the ground and fall all around. The sun streams in through the trees and creates a studding site. A great location for photoshoots!
With all of this space to explore, see if you can find the magical area hidden within the woods. It is not posted on the map, so the children will have to explore to find this gem. If you tell them to keep their eyes peeled for the woodland fairies, they might see the fairy castle door in one of the trees!
(For parents, it is located on one of the walking tracks, so no need to worry about little ones needing to run off into the depths of the woods!) Although it does still need a keep eye to spot!
Get your walking boots on and get ready to climb the hilly woods, an adventure awaits awaits as not only is there the fairy door to spot, but there is a wonderful viewpoint at the top of the hill. Take some binoculas to look out accross the view. You can see for miles!
Croham Hurst also a fabulous place for a photo shoot. With all the fallen leaves and trees dotted around, there is so much scope for fun photos.
Throwing leaves like to fall like snow is a great way to capture movement and smiles in little one's faces.
If you can hunt down the large fallen tree on the way up the hill, there is plenty of space for a whole family to sit side by side. And, backed with lots of goreous foliage and framed with trees, it's a perfect spot for a family portrait.
Beautiful heather grows at the top of the hill. Great colours for warm, autumnal photos.
Unfortunately some of it was burnt in a fire this year, so there is also a large charred area where the heather was set alight.
